How to test your virus scanner for its effectiveness Against Trojan?

For years many of us are using "Eicer" an antivirus test file, to test if the antimalware/antivirus is working correctly. Using the just released "Trojan Simulator" you can now test your Trojan scanner in the same manner, using a harmless demonstration Trojan. This is a risk-free way to see how your security software behaves in a real-world situation.

 

Installation is simple: Simply unzip all files contained in TrojanSimulator.zip to any directory. To start, simply double-click TrojanSimulator.exe.

 

When you run Trojan Simulator, you will be presented with a screen showing some informational text about Trojan Simulator. Clicking the Install button will install the demo trojan on your system. The demo trojan simulates a real trojan server by hiding its main window and writing an autostart entry to the registry.

 

Clicking the Uninstall button removes the autostart entry from the registry and then unloads the demo trojan server from memory. While the demo trojan is running, you get a chance to observe the behavior of any installed security software.

 

When run with the /install parameter, TSServ.exe loads into memory and adds an autostart entry to the registry. An information dialog will pop up notifying that the demo server was successfully installed along with the path to the server and its process ID. Most trojans don't really present a dialog saying they've successfully installed themselves in your system!

  

When run with the /uninstall parameter, TSServ.exe removes its autostart entry and then unloads all copies of itself from memory. If you run TSServ.exe without any parameters, nothing will happen - the program simply starts and exits.

One interesting thing was that out of 43 virus scanning engins, 36 reported the file as malware. Remaining 7 did not report any thing, in that seven KASPERSKY also was one of them.

 

May be kaspersky Does know that thae file is False positive(SAFE FILE) or it may report when you execute the file."

One Time password for Facebook Users

Facebook on October 13, 2010 at 1:43am announced feature which would help users to protect their account more securely. The feature includes the ability for people to request a one time password for use on public computers.

"First, we're launching one-time passwords to make it safer to use public computers in places like hotels, cafes or airports. If you have any concerns about security of the computer you're using while accessing Facebook, we can text you a one-time password to use instead of your regular password. "  The company said in a blog post.

To receive the one time password just text  "otp" to 32665 from a mobile phone(U.S.Only). You have to have already confirmed that the phone is yours on your Facebook account. The one-time password will expire after 20 minutes.

Facebook is rolling the feature out gradually, and it should be available to everyone in the coming weeks.

 Secondly the company has also introduced, the ability to sign out of Facebook remotely is now available to everyone. These session controls can be useful if you log into Facebook from a friend's phone or computer and then forget to sign out. From your Account Settings, you can check if you're still logged in on other devices and remotely log out. The company began rolling the feature out last month.

McAfee Secure url shortner for firefox & chrome

McAfee recently entered into race of URL shortening named "McAF.ee".  The draw back is that to shorten a URL one has to enter the McAfee Secure URL shortner home page every time.

To over come this problem there is a add-on for both Google Chrome & Firefox.

In chrome you can click the add-on present on top of tool bar to get shortened URL. The draw back is that one cannot create short URL to the links present inside the page.

Toshiba's 3DTV fabricated for viewing without the help of glasses

Toshiba has revolutionized the word of 3D TV by introducing  2 new 3D TV which can be viewed without the need for the 3D glasses. The two new 3D TVs named Regza 20GL1 and Regza 12GL1 were unveiled at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies  in Tokyo(JAPAN).

Regza 20GL1, a 20-inch flat-panel display with 1,280x720 resolutions and Regza 12GL1, a 12-inch flat-panel display with 466x350 resolution, uses auto-stereoscopic 3D technology which does away with the glasses by providing a filter on top of the TV set that will send the 3D image to the viewer.

UEFI Technology that drastically increases the system boot time:

The computer of next generation could be faster as the existing BIOS which is used for booting is replaced by a new software known as UEFI which replaces the 25 year old BIOS.

BIOS (basic input/output system) which have been used to boot up computers since 1979 are the program originally conceived to get a PC started after power-on. The BIOS also manages pre-boot data flow between the computer's operating system and attached devices such as the hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, and mouse. When the BIOS starts up your computer, it first determines whether all of the attachments are in place and operational and then it loads the operating system into the computer's memory from local storage (floppy, hard disk, CD-ROM, USB) or network.

UEFI which stands for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface will be a specification detailing an interface that helps hand off control of the system after the system is powered on, but before the operating system starts, such as Windows or Linux. UEFI will provide a clean interface between operating systems and platform firmware at boot time, and will support an architecture-independent mechanism for initializing add-in cards.
